Trump Blows First Congressional Endorsement
Renee Ellmers a Traitor to Conservatism
ALEXANDRIA, VA – On Saturday, presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump endorsed Rep. Renee Ellmers in North Carolina’s 2nd District. This is his first congressional endorsement of the election cycle and many conservatives consider it to be a slap in the face.
“Mr. Trump should have done his homework, Renee Ellmer’s has betrayed the conservative movement since she was first elected to Congress including voting for the Ex-Im Bank and the numerous Obama-Boehner budget deals,” said Diana Banister, Executive Director of Citizens for the Republic. “After a campaign of explicit overtures supporting conservative causes, she wasted no time in cozying up to the Establishment and House leadership. She used the largess of the Tea Party movement to get herself elected then went against the promises she made as a candidate on issues such as spending, immigration and life. It’s very disappointing that Mr. Trump, a man running a campaign based on opposing Washington’s entrenched interests and corruption wouldn’t recognize that Ellmers is the epitome of what is wrong with the political system. If Trump wants conservatives to come to his side in November, this is a very bad start.”
